In 2021, Wikirate launched the Apparel 100 project. The output was a comprehensive collection of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) data and supply chain transparency metrics for the world’s 100 largest apparel companies. With a combined market cap of over $1.22 trillion in 2018, these companies represented more than half of the global fashion market, making their transparency and sustainability practices critical.
The 2024 updated dataset includes 41 key metrics, ranging from greenhouse gas emissions and water usage to labor rights and corporate governance. It identifies gaps in disclosure and highlights opportunities for companies to improve their policies and practices.
Compiled in collaboration with Sustainometric researchers, the dataset is designed to inform policymakers, human rights advocates, investors, and sustainability professionals. It aims to drive accountability and promote better practices across the apparel sector.
Methodology
The following methodology was used for data collection:
- Entering Values: Metrics such as employee data, energy data, and other quantitative information were filled with appropriate values based on the reports.
- Marking Yes or No: For metrics like the availability of sustainability reports and membership-related questions, responses were marked as "Yes" or "No" based on the provided information.
- Marking as Unknown: Metrics were marked as "Unknown" when reports were unavailable, or companies did not provide the required information.
- Blank or Unknown: For private companies, companies involved in mergers, or those facing insolvency, metrics were left blank or marked as "Unknown."
- Handling Unclear or Missing Data: In cases where data was unclear, reports were unavailable, or information might be published in the future, the metrics were left blank.
The Apparel 100 research aggregates a broad set of data and indicators based on commonly used reporting standards like the Global Reporting Initiative and civil society research, like Fashion Revolution’s Fashion Transparency Index, that make their methodology and data open and transparent.
The data is aggregated from research using public sources (corporate reporting and websites) and complemented through collaborations with research organizations, with methods including desk research, data scraping and API connections.
Download this data set and use it in your analysis
Under Answers, use the filters to explore the data.
At the bottom of the page, there is a button to download data with the current filters in CSV format. Click in the arrow next to the button to choose the format, detail and number of answers that you want to export.
- CSV downloads will allow a maximum of 500 results per request without a Wikirate account and 5000 results per request with a Wikirate account. To download more results than that, you will need to do multiple exports (e.g. using the filters to split the export by year) or use the API.
- JSON downloads produce 20 results per page. When there are more than 20 results, the response will include at least one paging URL, which you can use to retrieve the complete list.
